SLOCOMBE/SLOCUM DNA PROJECT

Welcome to the world of DNA.

The Slocombe/Slocum DNA project was started by;

Melville C. Brown

Judy L. Slocum.  judylynnslocum@comcast.net

Our goal is to establish common male Slocum ancestors who carry the name Slocombe/Slocum, or its many spelling variations. We are looking for willing participants to continue this project from the many different family lines that carry the name.

__We are happy to announce a new member to our DNA Group. Kit #8602 relates back to Nathaniel Slocum son of Giles. He was an exact Match and we have confirmed one more Slocum Family Line. We would like to also confirm the lines of Peleg and Samuel Slocum. If you are male and carry the Slocum name and would be interested in taking the DNA Test we would like to hear from you.

Anthony and Giles Are Related

Generation after Generation has tried to determine
the relationship between the first three traceable family
members to our American Shores.
(Anthony, Giles and Simon)

With the use of DNA, we are proud to announce
that Anthony and Giles have one common Ancestor.
Anthony's will gives us proof that Giles was not his son.
Their relationship is still unknown, they could be
brothers, cousins, or uncle and nephew.

Our original thought, all three family lines ( Anthony, Giles, and Simon)
would have had an exact DNA match.
The family of Simon Slocombe and forefather of Joshua Slocum, from
Devon, England did not match with the family of Anthony and Giles.
We were able to trace this branch of the Slocombe Family back
to the date of 1513.

The accuracy of the Y-Chromosome test shows the signature
will change very slowly over time, but the pattern is stable over
hundreds of years. Bennett Greenspan, founder of Family Tree DNA,
indicated that if two men have identical results on a 12 marker test,
they are almost certainly related. However, there is only a 50 percent
chance that their common ancestor lived within the past 14.5
generations or roughly 600 years. If just one marker is different, that
means there has been a change, or mutation in the Y-Chromosome
since the common ancestor lived, pointing to a more distant relationship.
You can expect one variation or mutation, two variations is less useful,
and if three variations are different, you can consider the person
to be unrelated.
