CAPTAIN JOSHUA SLOCOMB (John S., Joshua Upham,John-The Exile, John, Captain Simon)

Joshua was born 20 Feb 1844 in Mount Hanley, Wilmot
Township, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was born on the family farm by the Bay of Fundy. Later years the family removed to Westport, Brier Island, Digby County, Nova Scotia, and gateway to the Bay of Fundy.
He started sailing at the young age of 14 and at the age of 16, when his mother died, "he shipped" out as an ordinary seaman on the merchant vessels from Liverpool, England, sailing the world.

Note: When Joshua applied for "Seaman Protection Certificate" in Boston, is when he changed his name to Slocum, 1864.

Joshua's sailing adventures were many, and on 31 January 1871 in Sydney, Australia, he married an American girl, Virginia Albertina Walker. Virginia was the daughter of William and Margaretta Walker. Virginia sailed with Joshua until the time of her death on 25 July 1884, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. All of their children were born on board ships, but only four out of seven survived infancy.

Joshua was best known for being the first man to sail around the world alone. He departed Boston Harbor in Massachusetts on 24 April 1895 at the age of 51, in his rebuilt 37-foot Sloop, "The Spray". He returned to Newport, Rhode Island on 27 June 1898 in his tiny Sloop, after a voyage of 46,000 miles, navigated single handedly. This historic adventure and achievement made him "THE PATRON SAINT" of small boat voyages, navigators, and adventurers all over the world.

Children:
01. Victor Joshua Slocum, born 10 Jan 1872 on board the "Constitution" berthed at Hathaway's Wharf, Spear Street, San Francisco, California. He married Estelle Woodruff and they had no children. He died 10 Dec 1949 in New York, Kings County, New York.

02. Benjamin Aymar Slocum, born 21 Dec 1873 in Melbourne,Victoria, Australia on board the ship "B.Aymar". He married Florence A. Sherman on 12 Aug 1892. He died 8 April 1965, Rochester, New York. (Buried in Lynn, Massachusetts)

03. Jessie Helena Slocum, born 10 June 1875 in the Philippine Islands on board the ship, "B. Aymar". She married Alfred W. Joyce on 3 July 1899 in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
She died 27 June 1960 in Santa Cruz, California.

04. James Abraham Garfield Slocum, born 3 March 1881 on board the ship "Amethyst" in Hong Kong. He married Grace May Davison in 1906 in Schenectady New York. He died 21 Jan. 1955 in Schenectady, New York.

Joshua married his second wife, Harriet "Hattie" Miller Elliot, 2 Feb 1886 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. She was born 1862 in Mount Hanley, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. She died Oct. 1952 in West Tisbury, Dukes County, Massachusetts. Harriet was Joshua's first cousin and they had no children.

I will add additional information from time to time.
